Diary of a Wimpy Kid Hard Luck
Author: Jeff Kinney
Prompt: how the conflict drives character development (causes the character to change)
The conflict in this book is how Greg's (the main character) best friend abandons him and he has to find new friends. He turns to a Magic 8 Ball to try to change his fate. The conflict in the story drives the character to change because before Greg's best friend tries to leave him Greg is struggling in middle school, but the only thing he basically has to survive is his best friend.
When Greg's best friend leaves him, Greg is sad and lonely, and tries desperately to fit in. When he can no longer take it, he turns to a Magic 8 Ball to try to change his fate. After Greg uses the magic 8 ball to answer some of his questions about why his best friend left him, the ball answers the questions in a way he had hoped, and it is a bit creepy as the answers seem to be exactly what he wanted them to be. Then he starts using the ball for everything. Eventually the 8 ball leads Greg to solve a problem he had earlier in the book, and then the ball is never talked about again in the rest of the book.
In the End Of the book Greg and his friend make up and become friends again. This shows how the conflict of the story drives the character to change because in the beginning Greg lost his best friend (conflict) and that caused him to change and think and do different things that eventually led to resolving the conflict.
